Featured Fan Writing #3

MechMoose has posted a new Featured Fan Writing on the blog! Check out the post here:

First things first, I would like to commend all of the talented writers that submitted work for this challenge. We feel incredibly privileged to have such a talented community participating in these activities. You all rock socks!

The writer we chose to focus on today is Echaniwarrior and their amazing poem all about freedom from oppression. Enjoy! :)

Fan Story -ShardOrigins

“Hi, here’s why I made it centered around the mice’s freedom from oppression… They were weak and everything stomped over them! There was no hope for these small things, the small mammals were weak and vulnerable! Wait, or were they? No… the only thing the mice had WAS hope. Others may have seen them as nothing but scraps. They weren’t though. Mech Mice stand for justice and equality, that’s who they are. They found their hope, the shard. With this they created themselves equal with their over-bearing environment. Protecting their brothers and sisters. The Dark Union plans to ruin that, but these mice will not stand were they have fallen before. They will rise from defeat and protect their hope. The hope that they can keep fighting for justice in a world of evil.” -Echaniwarrior

Excellent work, Echaniwarrior! For the next Fan Focus, we will once again be featuring your art! Click here to submit your artwork. You can also check out the previous Fan Focus’ by clicking here. So much clicking – so little time!

#3 Map Region Unlocked - Erg Great Dunes

The third piece of the map of Roden has been unlocked! Beyond the borders of Roden lies a vast and twisted wasteland, always threatening to close in…

TheErgDunes
As far as any mouse knows, the Erg Great Dunes are endless. Every explorer that has tried to venture into them has been met with catastrophe. Few have survived this burning ocean of sand for long. Here there are no Shards, no water, and nothing lives, save for strange and horrible creatures known only as the Mutants. Venturing into the Erg is an act not fit for mouse or beast.
“The Shards carved our world from those lifeless dunes. Brought life to death. But never forget that death still lurks out there. Be vigilant, and let no mouse seek their fortunes there.” - Grandmarshall Greyfoot

Stay tuned to discover where you can find the code to unlock the next piece! Explore more of Roden at www.mechmice.com/map.

#2 Map Region Unlocked - Dryseed Deadlands

The second piece of the map of Roden has been unlocked! The war fought in Season 1 did not start in Burntleaf. It began long ago, in a place called Rustroot…

DryseedDeadlands
The Dryseed Deadlands are a barren wasteland on the north-eastern edge of Roden. A desolate and forsaken territory, it was once the location of the great Rustroot Burrow – one of the most prosperous mouse colonies in history. All of that changed when a former leader of the Mech Mice did the unthinkable and removed the Rustroot Shard, claiming it for a sinister secret group that called themselves the Dark Union. The Rustroot Burrow was annihilated, the lands fell to ruin, and the first War of the Shards began. Dryseed remains a painful reminder of what happens when a Shard is removed from where it belongs.
“Any mouse having trouble understanding WHY we need the Mech Mice should take a jolly stroll through Dryseed. THAT’S where you’ll see the price of not standing up for what’s right!” - General Black

Mech Mice - What’s Next

Now that Mech Mice has officially launched, it’s time to figure out what to work on next. As you may know, we already have some pretty awesome plans like Chapter 3, iPad, and multiplayer. But we also want to make changes to the core game to make sure it’s as fun as possible.

This week the team will be having a meeting about the future of Mech Mice and I’ve been asked to present what you, the community thinks. What better way to get this feedback than by directly asking you on the blog!

WhatsNext

In the comments, tell us what YOU want to see out of Mech Mice. These can be huge features or small gameplay tweaks. Feel free to share any idea that comes to mind. We want to know what works and what doesn’t work so be as honest as you want. All comments will be discussed and considered by the team this week. Moose OUT!

#1 Map Region Unlocked - Blackwall Burrow

The first piece of the map of Roden has been unlocked! Season 1 of Mech Mice begins in Burntleaf, a small remote region of the Blackwall Badlands.

Unlocked-01-Burntleaf
On the northern edge of the continent are the Blackwall Badlands; tough lands inhabited by tougher mice. Dry, hot, and dangerous, there are nonetheless many creatures that call its many canyons home. The mice of Blackwall Burrow dwell underground in a vast networks of tunnels and caves, while others live in small villages that dot the region. The Shard of Blackwall is smaller than most, so the wilderness is not as lush as the rest of Roden, but there are many small oases if you look carefully. But be cautious – for rattlesnakes, eagles, desert cats and coyotes also roam these lands, along with the odd and mysterious rodent cousins, the Cave Bats.
“Whatta ya talking about? There’s PLENTY to eat here… if ya like the taste of CACTUS!” - Lefty, Grenadier

Map of Roden Scavenger Hunt

Story is a huge part of what Mech Mice is. -Mech Moose
Now that the game has officially launched, the team thought it would be cool to start telling the story of where the Mech Mice come from.

MechMiceLore

For those who don’t know, Mech Mice takes place in the land of Roden. To celebrate the launch of the Mech Mice game, the Team decided to release fun facts about Roden based on the different Mech Mice territories found on the map.

RodenMapLogo

The team devided the map into 15 pieces and scattered them across the blogosphere. And that's where we come in - we have to work for the map pieces! It’s up to us to find these blogs and collect the pieces. (These blogs? Do you mean blogs like us? :P) Each map piece will contain a fun fact, and will help you dive a little deeper into the ocean of lore that is Mech Mice!

MapOutline

Are you up for the challenge? I am! And don’t worry, the team is going to be posting clues on the Mech Mice blog to help point us in the right direction. Be sure to keep an eye on the blog tomorrow for the very first clue!

Featured Fan Art #3

Boy it’s been quite a while since we had a Fan Focus post! Well I couldn’t think of a better time to start than right after the launch of Mech Mice. After all, we owe a lot of the awesomeness of our game to you, the fans! :D

Today the team is featuring the incredible 3D modeling skills of Xonius. Check out Xonius' version of the Standard Blaster!

standard_blaster_by_Xonius
“I really worked quite hard creating this piece of CGI of MGFX (which ever you prefer calling). My main focus on this piece was to help me practice my modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering skills. A good 6 hours was spent creating the final 1280×800 (my screen res.) that you can see now. It is the Standard Blaster wielded by the Grunt Unit with high resolution textures and subdivisions, finely modeled in high poly mode with Maxon’s Cinema 4D. I always take pride in my work and make it look as real to life, or design as possible. I feel that I hit the nail on the head with this model.” -Xonius

Here's what it looks like on Mech Mice's Office's wall:

3 Days to Launch – Polish

The sneak peek for today is all about the fine tuning of Mech Mice. There are so many tiny changes and additions that really make the game feel complete. Here are a few of my favourites.

Health Bars

All units and bugs will now show their health bar in game. Being able to see how much damage you give and take adds a new level of strategy to the gameplay.

Health Bars

MechHeal

 Special Effects

All of the special effects we added make a huge difference. Blowing up cactuses has never felt so good!

FlowerSFX

CactusSFX

Pause Menu

The pause menu has been updated to give you a full screen option and movie mode. Movie mode allows you to move the camera around freely.

PauseScreen

 Special Abilities

Special abilities give each unit a unique personality in the gameplay. My favourite so far is Lefty’s decoy ability. So cool!

LeftyDecoy

TurnerSpecial

We also restricted how many times you can use the special abilities. Use them wisely!

SpecialIcons

Dialogue

The dialogue has improved a lot. Not only is it more instructional, it also showcases the unit personalities perfectly.

NewDialogue

Music & Sound Effects

Chris (aka Screenhog) has been working incredibly hard making sure all of the music and sound effects are in the game. Well, they’re in and they sound amazing!

ChrisPiano

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There is still a lot more to the game, but you’ll have to wait and play to find out! Stay tuned to the blog tomorrow as we take a closer look at what will be available in the Mech Mice store. Moose OUT!

4 Days to Launch – Adventure Mode

Happy Friday everyone! The launch countdown continues with only 4 days to go – Woot!

Today we’re sneak peeking a feature that I’ve been waiting for since the very beginning – ADVENTURE MODE! Once you beat a level in story mode, you’ll be able to replay the same level with a custom squad.

ADVENTURE MODE

Here’s what the selection screen looks like. As you can see, there are lots of units to choose from. Each unit has unique abilities that seriously change the dynamics of the game.

AdventureMode

In adventure mode, you’ll be able to challenge yourself by using different unit combinations. In this level, I paired Pi and Flank together. The amount of firepower between two heavy units is intense!

FlankandPi

This time I built my squad using the store units. Having a medic on your squad is a huge advantage.

StoreUnits

Next I needed a good challenge – so I attempted to take on Queen Termina with Torq, the Engineer. This might take a few tries…

TorqandTermina

In my opinion, adventure mode is what this game is all about. It’s a great feeling when you conquer a level multiple times with different unit combos. All of a sudden, the Mech Mice tagline makes sense:

Build your squad. Join the battle.

Tomorrow we will be sneak peeking the polish. It’s the small things that really fuse the Mech Mice experience together. Stay tuned and spread the word! Moose OUT!

5 Days to Launch – New Units

5 more days! The studio is buzzing with excitement as we approach the long awaited launch day. Today we’re sneak peeking all of the units you’ll be able to use at launch. Let’s get this party started!

STORE UNITS

Below are the units that will be available in the Mech Mice store. But if you are a founder, they will have already been added to your account. Let’s learn more about them!

Turner

Turner – Dragoon

Selfless, stern and strategic, Turner is a legendary leader and mentor. Having served in the Mech Mice since the First War, he has survived more battles, and achieved more victories, than most mice ever will.

Combat: An average combat unit with high-utility and multiple abilities
Base health: Medium
Movement Range: 2 (+3 for sustained)
Primary attack: Medium damage, medium range shot
Special abilities: Smoke grenade – creates a smoke screen that obstructs and stuns enemy units, but permits friendly units.
Cons: A robust unit in terms of health, but cannot generate the high-damage necessary for more difficult encounters.

Petra

Petra – Medic

Petra is one of the bravest medics to ever serve in the Mech Mice. She’s sharp, quick, and handy with a bandage. She needs good backup though – she can be a bit flighty sometimes, and may not notice a giant bug about to squish her.

Combat: A pure utility unit – combat abilities are severely limited
Base health: Low; strategic placement is critical to make sure she can heal other units without getting hit
Movement Range: 3 (+4 for sustained)
Primary attack: low damage / low range pistol
Special ability: Full heal/revive – this ability either heals a conscious unit to full health, or revives a knocked-out unit to half their life.
Cons: the Medic is much too fragile in combat to solo through almost all missions, but they serve an incredibly valuable role during intense combat situations (essentially a mobile flower health).

Lefty

Lefty – Grenadier

Stubborn, gruff, and always arguing, Lefty can be a pain. But no one can argue with the firepower he packs to the battlefield. Though dependable, he’s very superstitious – even though he’s right handed, he throws grenades with his left because he considers it lucky.

Combat: Clunky in combat – but extremely effective damage
Base health: High
Movement Range: 2 (+3 for sustained)
Primary attack: High damage, short range grenade. Does low splash damage to all nearby targets (watch out for friendly fire!)
Special ability: Decoy – The Grenader throws a specialized grenade that deploys a holographic decoy of himself. All enemy units caught in the area of effect are immediately provoked to attack the decoy, making this an excellent means of crowd control.
Cons: Grenades are very unwieldy – their short range and potential friendly fire make them difficult to control. Close range enemies in particular are hazardous to Grenades.

FOUNDER UNITS

These special units are only available if you purchased a founders package. Once we launch, they will never be available again! Here’s what Gamma, Pi, Omega and Sigma all look like in game.

FounderUnits2

These guys will have different special abilities and stats from the other units in their class. But you’ll have to use them to find out what they are ;) . Remember – founder units are only available if you purchase a founders package. You still have 5 more days to get one – click here to learn more!

I know what you’re thinking – how are we going to be able to use these awesome units? The answer lies in tomorrows sneak peek – Adventure Mode! Moose OUT!

6 Days to Launch – New Levels

And the countdown continues! Only 6 days until the full Mech Mice experience is unleashed. The team is working super hard polishing the game so it’s ready for next week.

Today we’re going to be sneak peeking brand new levels! They include new game mechanics, units, and epic boss battles. We made sure to save the best levels for the official launch.

Level 1-7

A while back, we released an image showing the plan for this level using hexagon pieces. There are a lot of very unique game mechanics in 1-7. It’s definitely one of my favourites.

Level1-7

Level 1-8

In this epic boss battle, you face fury of Queen Termina. Are you up for the challenge?

Level1-8

Level 2-5

In 2-5, we are first introduced to both Betsay, the Mech and Torq, the Engineer. You’ll be using Dusty to fight off waves of bugs while Torq tunes up the Mech.

Level2-5

Level 2-6

It’s time to unleash the Mech’s extreme firepower for the first time! Nuff said.

Level2-6

Level 2-7

2-7 is a lot of fun. It involves tremendous amounts of firepower, strategy and teamwork. I love this level.

Level2-7

Level 2-8

I’m probably most excited about this boss battle. I won’t give anything away – all I’ll say is that it will most likely take you a few tries. Good luck!

Level2-8

Well there you have it! In the comments, let us know what level you’re looking forward to the most and why. My top levels are 1-7, 2-7 and of course, 2-8.
